What the scene means
The Xoloitzcuintli (“show-low-eets-QUEENT-lee”) is the hairless Mexican dog named after Xólotl, the god associated with death and the underworld. In Mexica tradition, the souls of the dead had to cross a great river on the way to Mictlán, and a dog helped them across. Mexico’s Secretaría de Cultura still calls the dog a guardian of life after death.
That is why Xolo figures appear on so many ofrendas — and why this scene is chosen by people who find comfort in the idea that their pet was not alone on the way.
Best photos for this scene
- Walking or standing photos work best for a side-by-side walk.
- Dark-coated pets look striking against the marigold field.
- Small pets and cats work too; the guide adjusts to their size.
Best for dog lovers, families with Mexican roots, and anyone who wants a gentle, hopeful tribute.
Frequently asked questions
Does my pet need to be a Xolo?
No. The Xolo is the guide in the scene; your own pet, of any breed or species, is the one coming home.
Is this the dog from Coco?
Our guide is an original illustration of the Xoloitzcuintli breed, which appears in Mexican tradition long before any film. It is not a film character.
What does the Xoloitzcuintli mean on Día de Muertos?
It represents the companion who guides souls to Mictlán, the land of the dead. Families often place a Xolo figure or alebrije on the ofrenda.
