About Day of the Dead for Pets

Day of the Dead for Pets is a small, independent site about one thing: remembering the animals we loved during Día de los Muertos. We explain when the Day of the Dead for pets is, what it means and how to build an ofrenda for a pet, and we offer a tool that turns a photo of your pet into a Día de Muertos memorial video.
Why we made it
Every October, more people discover that pets have their own day in the Día de los Muertos calendar — often right after losing a dog or cat. Most of what they find is a single social media post. We wanted one clear, kind, accurate place to learn about it and do something with that grief.
How we write
- Día de los Muertos is a living Mexican tradition, not a theme. We describe customs as they are commonly practiced and say so when they vary by region.
- We don’t present popular custom as ancient fact. The October 27 date for pets, for example, is a modern folk practice and we say that.
- Pet safety comes first. Our altar advice flags flowers, foods and candles that can harm living pets.
- Our memorial videos are AI-generated from your photo and we label them that way. They are tributes, not real footage, and we make no spiritual claims.
- We never publish customer photos or videos, or use them as examples.
Who runs this site
Day of the Dead for Pets is operated by Kemi (kemiweb), an independent developer. Hi, I’m Kemi. I build small websites on my own, and I love animals: I share my home with Nice, a British Shorthair cat, and Heymi, a blue merle border collie. I made this site so that anyone can remember the pets they have lost the way Día de Muertos remembers people — with marigolds, light and a little joy.
